Ex-Dividend Date
Quick Definition
The date on which a stock begins trading without the right to receive the upcoming dividend payment.
What Is Ex-Dividend Date?
The ex-dividend date (or "ex-date") is the critical cutoff for receiving a stock's upcoming dividend. If you buy shares on or after this date, you won't receive the upcoming dividend - the seller gets it instead.
Key Dividend Dates (in order):
| Date | What Happens |
|---|---|
| Declaration Date | Board announces dividend amount, dates |
| Ex-Dividend Date | First day stock trades without dividend rights |
| Record Date | Company checks shareholder list (1 day after ex-date) |
| Payment Date | Dividend is paid to shareholders |
The Rule:
- Buy BEFORE ex-dividend date → You get the dividend
- Buy ON or AFTER ex-dividend date → Seller gets the dividend
Important Details:
- Stock price typically drops by approximately the dividend amount on ex-date
- Trade settlement is T+1 (next business day)
- Ex-date is typically 1 business day before record date
Example Timeline:
- Declaration: Jan 15 - "We'll pay $0.50 on Feb 28"
- Ex-Dividend: Feb 10
- Record Date: Feb 11
- Payment: Feb 28
To receive the Feb 28 payment, you must buy shares by Feb 9 (day before ex-date).
Price Adjustment on Ex-Date:
| Scenario | Day Before | Ex-Date Morning |
|---|---|---|
| Stock Price | $50.00 | ~$49.50 |
| Dividend | $0.50 | - |
| Your Value | $50.00 | $50.00 (same) |
Dividend Capture Strategy: Some traders try to buy before ex-date and sell after to "capture" dividends. This rarely works because:
- Stock price drops by dividend amount
- Transaction costs
- Tax implications (short-term vs. long-term gains)
- Not a reliable arbitrage opportunity
Tips for Dividend Investors:
- Know ex-dates for your holdings
- Don't panic when stock drops on ex-date
- Consider automatic DRIP to reinvest dividends
- Time purchases strategically around ex-dates if buying anyway
Ex-Dividend Date Example
- 1Apple ex-date Feb 10: Buy by Feb 9 to get dividend
- 2Stock at $100 with $2 dividend typically opens at ~$98 on ex-date
