GBP/EUR — British Pound / Euro

Fetching the rate…
What moves GBP/EUR
GBP/EUR is the number of euros one pound buys. Most of the interbank market quotes the same rate the other way round, as EUR/GBP, which is why a figure from a bank and a figure from a broker can look completely different while agreeing exactly — one is simply one divided by the other.
It is the cleanest read on the UK against the euro area precisely because the dollar is on neither side. When the dollar moves, GBP/USD and EUR/USD usually move together and GBP/EUR barely reacts. A “pound falls” headline built on GBP/USD therefore says nothing reliable about this rate — which matters, because for anyone in Britain paying for a European holiday, a European property or a European supplier, this is the rate that decides the bill.
What does move it is the gap between Bank of England and European Central Bank policy expectations, UK inflation running on a different path from the euro area’s, and UK-specific fiscal events. Since the UK left the EU single market and customs union at the start of 2021, trade has run under an agreement that is tariff-free but not friction-free, so changes to customs and regulatory arrangements can reach sterling in a way they did not before.
The policy backdrop
| Central bank | Policy rate | Next decision |
|---|---|---|
| Bank of England | 3.75% | 17 Sep 2026 |
Only one leg is shown because we hold the Federal Reserve and the Bank of England and no other central bank. A rate differential needs both, so it appears on GBP/USD alone rather than being estimated here.
