What moves DXY
The US Dollar Index measures the dollar against six currencies at fixed weights, dominated by the euro at 57.6%. It is not a trade-weighted measure of the dollar and does not claim to be. The weights come from the trade patterns of the 1970s and have been adjusted once, in 1999, when the euro replaced the German mark, French franc, Italian lira, Dutch guilder and Belgian franc with a single entry.
The practical consequence is that DXY is close to a leveraged read on EUR/USD. Nearly three-fifths of it is the euro, and it contains no Chinese renminbi, no Mexican peso and no Korean won — so an index of the dollar against the countries the United States actually trades with today would look substantially different. The Federal Reserve publishes exactly that in its broad trade-weighted dollar index, and the two can move by materially different amounts over the same period.
Read with that caveat, it is still the most useful single dollar gauge available: a continuous daily history back to March 1973 with a base of 100, and the thing most market commentary means when it says “the dollar”. What it will not tell you is what the dollar did against your own money, unless your currency is one of the six.
The policy backdrop
| Central bank | Policy rate | Next decision |
|---|---|---|
| Federal Reserve | 3.50–3.75% | 16 Sep 2026 |
Only one leg is shown because we hold the Federal Reserve and the Bank of England and no other central bank. A rate differential needs both, so it appears on GBP/USD alone rather than being estimated here.
